Ben's Bio

Capturing his subjects in the moment is Adelaide-based Benjamin Liew’s philosophy to obtaining that special image. Having won numerous awards both locally and overseas, it seems that philosophy is holding Benjamin in good stead.

“I love not having preconceptions,” says Benjamin.

“Some of the most intriguing photos I’ve taken ended up being nothing like I had planned.”

Winner of several national and international photography awards, including the silver award in the 2010 International Aperture Award in the Abstract/Illustrative Category and the Gold award in the 2010 SAPPA commercial category have strengthened Benjamin’s resolve for looking at things in a different way.

“Entering competitions is a way of learning for me,” says Benjamin.

“To be surrounded by other such talented photographers helps me to hone my craft as I continue to learn about the field.”

As a member of the South Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP) state council sub-committee, Benjamin feels fortunate to be able to give back to the community.

“I wouldn’t be here today without the wonderful support of some great mentors and I hope I can inspire up and coming photographers in the same way.”

With a strong philanthropic resolve, Benjamin has worked extensively with charity organisation The Animal Welfare League. As a commercial and portrait photographer, Benjamin has also worked with high profile corporate clients such as Optus, Coles and the SA Film Corporation.

Benjamin’s most recent highlights include shooting architectural projects, one of which featured in the Capture Magazine 2010 Annual. The appreciation of the design and structure that is involved in creating an architectural masterpiece inspires him to continue to seek out commercial architectural work.

But it’s Benjamin’s passion that keeps him striving for more. With a personal collection of more than 100 cameras, some of which are more than 100 years old, Benjamin is passionate about life and seeing beauty in the mundane. Photographing images that open up the viewers minds to new visual experience is what drives his passion.
